  • Yeouido Saetgang is loved by citizens as the most ecological urban space along the Han River. The deep relationship with SeoAhn continues until the Yeouido Saetgang River is created.

Yeouido Saetgang was originally a vast delta deposited by Bamseom along the Han River and Yeouido. Since the Joseon dynasty, it used to be a ranch using a broad field, and it was a land full of vitality where plants and birds grew, and birds gathered through flooding and sedimentation.

However, in 1916, the site turned into an industrial faciltiy to accommodate airfied. In 1968, large-scale civil works to create a circle levee began in Yeouido in accordance with the Hangang Development Plan. In the process, Bamseom, a treasure trove of ecosystems, disappeared, and Saetgang degraded to an artificial river responsible for urban drainage.

The first relationship between SeoAhn and Yeouido Saetgang began in 1993 as Bamseom was created due to continuous sedimentation and the paradigm for the environment came to the fore.

The shore and waterfront, used as parking lots and sports facilities, were converted into ecological spaces by drawing water from the Han River and subway water. Thus, the first ecological park in Korea was created in 1997 as a habitat for living things and a space for nature learning along the Han River. As a result, the Saetgang area has value as a wetland ecosystem with the widely formed willow community and the sedimentary area developed along the riverside.

Ten years later, Seoul city raised the ecological value of the Yeouido due to the 'Hangang Renaissance Project.' but Seoul opened the 'Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park Prize Competition' to solve the problem of frequent sedimentation due to the blockage of natural water. SeoAhn and Saetgang Yeouido continued their relationship. The main concept of the Design Competition was to emphasize the ‘network of ecology/landscape/culture with the Han River and present the Ecological Sponge Effect as a detailed strategy. This was a strategy to convert the wetland area of the site, which is undergoing the land conversion process, into a sponge-like land condition that can hold water.

The current Yeouido Saetgang, where the non-pressure flow with the Han River is made, is a space where you can find the most naturalness in the Han River in the city center, and a space where many lives are conceived in the vast and long willow clusters, reeds, and aquatic plant communities. In addition, the songs of the animals and insects in the seasons and the powerful sound of the river fill the park like the harmony of nature.
