Park / Seoul Botanic Park

본문

  • Magok, where the Seoul Botanic Park is located, is a vast plain consisting of a floodplain in the lower reaches of the Han River, and many poets and visitors have loved its beautiful scenery since ancient times. The broad plains of the Han River basin made up of rice paddies, which form the basis of Korean agricultural culture, and the mountains floating on it like an island are representative landscapes of Magok before urbanization.

The botanic park serves as a starting point for the natural flow to penetrate deep into the city as a gentle passageway where the Han River, which symbolizes the natural area and the urban area raised by the embankment, interacts with each other. The newly created lake, maintaining the height of the original topography, is naturally connected to the reservoir and water flow that collects rainwater from the surrounding area beyond the old embankment and discharges it into the Han River.

Due to the nature of the site, wetlands and vast fields have already been prepared, but the topography of hills and mountains is created to provide various habitats for other abundant plant species. The new topography will create habitat conditions for plants while giving botanical garden visitors a sense of stepping away from the daily life of the city and entering somewhere else.

The Seoul Botanic Park is divided into three areas: Theme Garden, Garden Culture Experience Center, and Forest Culture Center. The first is the theme garden surrounded by newly created terrain, accessible through two entrances. The main entrance on the south starts with aquatic plants that represent the local identity of Magok and leads to an exhibition space for native Korean plants. The entrance on the north guides to Korea's unique plant exhibition space, where you can feel the symbols and meanings of traditional gardens and plants and nostalgia of the old gardens.

In the central part of the Theme Garden, some gardens show the sensual beauty of various seasonal plants, including horticultural varieties worldwide. There are spaces for pauses and rest on one side, consisting of a garden with medicinal and aromatic plants and a tea house where you can taste and feel the plants. Open spaces that can accommodate various programs are prepared in each area. And a special exhibition space that can continuously change the theme garden exhibition is located near the greenhouse and tea house.

The second is the Garden Culture Experience Center, where you can experience gardening and display of horticultural crops related to the agricultural production space, the original landscape of Magok, centering on the old drainage pumping station. Education on gardening is provided for various age groups and levels, from children to adults.

Third, the Forest Cultural Center is a place that can accommodate events such as garden fairs and display various tree varieties that require a relatively large exhibition space in connection with the large lawn of the park.

The greenhouse, which shows the unique plants and cultures of cities in both the Mediterranean and tropical climates, exhibits the native plants of each city as well as materials that offer its unique garden culture. Effective creation of a topography reminiscent of the natural environment of the city and a three-dimensional flow of movement inside the greenhouse enable visitors to experience dynamic landscapes. The special exhibition space and cafe inside the greenhouse allow visitors to share it more diversely and enjoyably.

The core of the Seoul Botanic Garden's landscape design is understanding and deep sympathy for the diverse relationships between humans and plants. And as the Seoul Botanical Garden grows into a hub of plant culture that colors everyday life and the city green, the design will be completed together.
